When developing a projects, take into account that many people may not be able to complete a whole project, but would still like to be actively involved in pleasurable and productive occupation. With this in mind you can design projects to be “shared”. People do the part of the project they are able to or that they enjoy. This also helps to create a non-threatening, non-competitive environment as each person is doing his/her own important part. Not only do they feel useful, but they gain a great deal of satisfaction knowing that their contribution has made it possible for others to enjoy craft.
Regardless of whether people are healthy or have a disability they need to feel useful.
It is too easy to generalize as to what people are able to do, especially if they are elderly. Pre-judging a person’s ability is even more likely if they suffer from Alzheimer’s, low vision or limited mobility.
Activities such as Cutting, Gluing, Poly Fun, Stuffing and Threading could be ideal, in that they may:-
- Require very little skill
- Offer hours of pleasurable occupation
- Can be done in either a Day Centre, Hostel or in the comfort of their own home.
Some people may find that they can make a complete item, while others may require a little help from Carers, family members or friends. For example they may need assistance with:-
- Drawing a simple picture for Poly Fun and Collage projects.
- Sewing up items such as Cushions and Soft Toys that they can stuff.
- Making little heads for Plaiting and Threading projects.
There is no right or wrong when doing craft – just let your imagination run wild! We invite you to try these projects that are the favorite of many!
Here ia a list of all the project we have made and documented and soon we will have all the photographs up here, for you to get inspired:
