Our aim is to promote the use of craft in nursing homes, hotels and retirement villages. We believe craft can be used as a cure to relieve stress, boredom and loneliness. A tailored craft program suitable for individuals who are elderly and frail, who live with some form of disability, or who are fit and well and looking for meaningful activity as an interest in life. All these people gain feelings of fulfilment and achievement that leads to pleasure and enjoyment and a sense of participating in life.
We appreciate how little staff time and funds are available, and believe volunteers, family and friends could be enlisted to help with the establishment and continued existence of crafts program. By using recycled goods you get a continuity of supply of materials, at no cost. When they see the change in their relatives they will be happy to assist by bringing surplus plastic bags, old jeans, ribbons, buttons etc to be recycled into beautiful, interesting items.
From our experience with the community and the “feedback” from numerous Centres, many people (including those who would normally be assessed as unable to achieve anything) have had their lives enriched and gained a wonderful sense of satisfaction and achievement by being involved in craft activities.
Once they start, people realise the pleasure they obtain by being pleasurably occupied. It becomes important for them to have access to a continuous supply of craft materials, so that they have the opportunity to work at their own pace, in their own rooms – whenever they feel like it.
